location
A filming location is a place where some or all of a film or television series is produced, in addition to or instead of using sets constructed on a studio backlot or soundstage. For example, the television series 24 is filmed primarily on location except for some scenes which are always filmed on the same sets. The on location shooting in Los Angeles is one thing that makes the show such a success.
On location is a term used to describe the filming on such a real site.

The following outlines the typical location selection process: Producer sends a script. Locations Officer does a “script break-down” outlining specific types of locations needed for scenes in the script. Locations library is searched to determine areas that best fit the overall character of the script and suitable locations are selected. If these locations cannot be found in the library, a scout is hired to search and photograph the locations. Files are copied and forwarded to the production company. Production Company may then decide to visit the suggested area(s) or may decide Nova Scotia is not an appropriate fit.
